Illustrator Filters

I cannot get many of the available filters (sketch, texture, etc.) to activate within Illustrator 10. Others such as Blur seem to work fine. I'm sure that I'm missing something simple, but I can't figure it out. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Some filters work on vector art (lines & shapes drawn in Illustrator), others on raster art (such as scanned photographs). Try creating a document with both, and by selecting different elements, see what filters are available.
