Illustrator file seems to be blank in Photoshop

I took an old map saved as a psd and opened it in Illustrator CS to use the Live Trace on it. I saved it and opened it in Photoshop in order to Color Burn it across another canvas.

When the Ilustrator file opened in Photoshop, the frame was gray and no image could be seen inside. I tried several times in different formats. I used AI, PDF, and EPS to no avail.

Ant ideas?

I don't know whether this will work as I haven't tried it yet, but I remember reading somewhere to copy vector file in Illustrator to clipboard, launch photoshop with blank canvas, Edit, Paste - chose shape layer, pixel or path as preferred.

Illustrator preferences | file handling & clipboard must have AICB selected. It won't work if this is not selected.

You may have to expand the live trace first, Object>Live Trace>Expand.
