Illustrator CS splitting paths on import

Hi, i'm importing a freehand eps into illustrator and its splitting the file into numerous horizontal segments.

Ordinarily this wouldn't be a problem, but its a print job and I want to trap the logo intyo the background.

So I'm applying a stroke which is also applying to the 'horizontal' segments, I want to have a single shape, i'm sure its a prefs/settings thing - I just cant find where it is.....any suggestions?

You're going to have to Pathfinder>Merge the segments together.
