Hi all - I've been running Ill 10.03 for about 18months with no problems - when it crashes - now when I try to start it up I get the loading screen - it runs through the usual checks then I get this "Error Loading Plug-ins - Adobe Illustrator" - when I click OK to continue I get this "Acrobat PDF File Format is having difficulties" when I click OK Illustrator loads but I get no fonts listed and every job I load comes in corrupt - HELP - I've done numerous deletes & re-installs but nothing corrects this problem - HELP

I'm using 9 atm to get by but I do need 10 up and running asap

ciao

Mel

Hate to state the obvious - but have you tried trashing your prefs?

Hi - thanks for the quick reply - atm working on a pc not a mac - so I'm not very pc techie - where would I find the prefs on a pc? - if I was on a mac that's the first thing I would have done

If you hold down the "Alt", "Ctrl" and "Shift" keys just after you double click the icon to fire up Illustrator it will ask you to reset the prefs file

There is a chance that it could be a corrupt font!

Are you using and Font Management system, i.e. Adobe Type Manager? If you are, try deactivating all fonts in ATM apart from your core fonts. Start Illustrator and if it starts up ok, then slowly reactivate a few fonts at a time in ATM and using this method you should eventually discover which font is causing the problem

unfortunatly - I'm not using ATM - just fonts loaded into my pc font folder

One last question.....are you trying to start illustrator from a ai file or from the main Illustrator icon in your start menu or desktop?

from the main icon on desktop - loads ok till it comes up with the error ""Error Loading Plug-ins - Adobe Illustrator.exe

To be quite honest, i'm stuck for an answer now. A colleage has just suggested one last thing. When Illustrator has opened, go to the preferences ("Edit", "Preferences" and select "File-handing and Clipboard" and uncheck "Copy as PDF" and restart Illustrator.

I'm afraid that beyond this, I've no other ideas.

thanks I'll try this - one last option is to format my HD - which is the last option

Since you're on a pc, you might have a problem with antivirus/antispyware programs. There have numerous people on here with Ill problems on pcs.

You might try disabling any AV/AS software and reinstalling Ill. If you have reinstalled ATM without disabling software, that too could be giving you problems, as it runs in the background.

If you do this & Ill works ok, you can try enabling AV/AS software and see how things go.

thanks will try this - but it's worked with nortons since I installed it 18 months ago

Ok, one last thing. Firstly, in the preferences, select "Plugins and Scratch disk" and change the plugins folder location to anywhere what hasn't got any plugins. restart Illustrator......

Does it open OK? (although you'll have no plugins! If it does, a plugin has corrupted. If this is the case, de-install Illustrator, manually go to the plugins and directoy and ensure that is deleted, then try reinstalling illustrator again.

Let me know if the first bit works at least works or not

hi

well it works partially - I don't get the "Acrobat PDF File Format is having difficulties" error anymore - but I still get the "Error Loading Plug-ins - Adobe Illustrator" - think the exe file might be corrupt - gonna copy a one off a colleague

The way moontho described to trash prefs is for Photoshop, not Illustrator.

Do a search in your Adobe program folder for "AIPREFS" (without the quotemarks of course) and once you locate this file simply delete it.

Illustrator will build a new prefs file the next time you launch it.

I've seen a million of those "Error loading plug-ins" errors being solved by doing this.

Just to add to that post - if the search doesn't find it do two things - first check that you have hidden files or folders checked in Windows Explorer and then just search your whole system for it.

The reason I mention that is because in Illy CS the file is located outside the Adobe folder but I think it was in there in 10.

Actually thinking about it - it probably depends on the operating system rather than the version of Illustrator! Just search your whole system for it.

I'll just keep posting by myself if that's alright with everyone. ;-)
