hi all. i'm using illustrator 10 and i've had this question for a while now. other than mathematically figuring it out, is there a way to use the horizontal distribute center tool to create equal divisions between objects of various widths?
for example: 5 rectangles of various widths(added up, NOT equaling 8.5in) needed to fit in a 8.5in width.
thanks for the help.

Try going to Window/ Align. In the Align Window you can Distribute Objects. There are a number of options there so I'd suggest you play around to see if one fits your needs.

If you click the little triangle in the align window and select Show Options, you get more control of distribution.

Using OSX 10.3.8 on a G4

Thanks jmgalvin. totally forgot about the added options option. working out the rust.
thanks again.
