Does anyone know if there is a patch or something for Win98 Second Edition. I'm getting lots of illegal operation error messages, mostly when printing. Is this common? Anyone had this before? HELP!

Thanks,

Local printing or network printing? HP Printers? [sig][/sig]

Sorry, not enough information. Network printers, Mostly HP, one Lexmark. Novell server.

When I started here, people were having tons of printing problems. Some jobs would hang out all day, yet printing nothing. Others were lucky if they could see the printer, let alone print to it. I had to re-setup most all the HP printers that were networked. Since so many variables could play a part of your big picture I would try a couple things:

Rule out your constants. Does it happen to everyone? If so, look into re-setting up your network printer from scratch. It doesn't take too long, and that way you know for a fact it's set up correct & how you'd like it to be.

Does it happen to people when printing from a specific program? If 9 outta 10 of those problems are coming from printing MS Word documents double check what other programs are running in those users' background. Your answer may be there.

Also, it's a good idea to make sure each user is running a current Novell Client.

Just outta curious, are your users running the GroupWise email client? If so, you may want to remove that "Notify" from startup. That alone can cause tons of network issues.

Good Luck and let us know ~ [sig][/sig]

I'm in a novell environment. Most of the problems I encounter with printing, actually with invalid operation errors, are due to temp files and/or currupt print drivers. I would delete any .TMP or ~*.* files from c:\windows\temp. I would also delete the folders VBE and MXLIBDIR from the Temp directory. Sometimes the spooler gets hosed. I sometimes need to delete the files in c:\windows\spool\printers. Changing the printing options from Spooling to Print Directly to Printer sometimes helps too. I hope this helps.
