illegal operation in sort/merge module

Hi,
i'm trying to sort a file and i'm getting always the same error:
"illegal operation in sort/merge module"
Does anyone know what can cause this kind of error?

I get the same error with a program i made and also with a sample program (from

http://www.csis.ul.ie/cobol/examples/Sort/MaleSort.htm).

Language:M/F Workbench (ver 4.0.26)
OS:Windows 2000

Hi,
the strange thing about the problem is that now it's ok without doing anything at the code. (Also the example, runs fine).I don't know,maybe the files were locked and the program couldn't open them? It looks that restarting the PC had good effects.
