IIS w/ Sharepoint 401.2 error

I have a sharepoint portal that I cannot access. I am getting a 401.2 unauthorized error that looks like this:

HTTP Error 401.2 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to server configuration.
Internet Information Services (IIS)


The server running IIS was recently rebooted which is the only event that occured since this site became inaccessible.

The log files show this code: 401 2 2148074254

any help would be appreciated

2148074254 maps to SEC_E_NO_CREDENTIALS, and this is your key

the 401 2 is simply the 401.2 error you are being presented with

what is the authentication model of the website? IE, integrated windows auth, anonymous auth using network service (or a domain account), etc.?

its almost as if its set to use anonymous, but does not have a valid user account set (such as network service), or has none set at all.

another thing just popped into my head too...this could be an IE setting problem. Put this site into local intranet, then set the advanced options of the intranet zone to always prompt for username and password. when prompted, type in your username in the form of domain\username (assuming this is domain joined server, otherwise, try local user creds in form of server\user).
if this allows access, the problem is client side and not server side.
