Hello,

Ok, I know this sounds really simple because relaying is something that can easily be turned on or off but I am unable to get the correct sequence here to make it work. My problem is that we have written a web applicaiton that allows sending alerts when a user sets up an alert filter in a database table. We have a middle tier applicaition that will send an email alert through the SMTP service on the IIS box the application resides on. However, the original programmer hard-coded the FROM: admin@vtilities.com in the application and the actual domain the servers reside in is not that domain. I have succesffuly sent emails through the SMTP service using Outlook Express and setting the FROM email to admin@ActualDomainName.com and it worked, but if I change it to admin@vtilities.com it fails every time and says sender rejected. I have tried all kids of settings and I can't get it to work. Can someone please give me some information on how to correct this problem.

Thanks for any help in this matter,
jcfrasco

How is SMTP setup on the Web server?
Are there domians configured under the Default SMTP VS?
In SMTP Prpoerties under Delivery Tab - Outbound Security, what does the config look like?
What about SMTP Props - Access Tab - Authentication?

WhoKilledKenny,

Sorry but I missed the notification email that indicated someone had replied to my question. The SMTP server is setup to relay all except what is in the list and that is empty (this should relay everything). There is a domain configured because the server is joined into a domain IIS automatically created a default virtual server and included an instance of the actual domain the server is in, but the domain I am trying to get it to allow is not the one it is in and in fact does not really exist. As for the SMTP properties they are:
First Retry: 15
Second Retry: 30
Third Retry: 60
Subsequent Retry: 240
Delay Notification: 12 Hours
Expiration Timeout: 2 Days

Everything else is the default settings except for Relay Restriction I allowed everyone but what was in the list. I didn't put anything in the list so for testing this should allow everything through. This is not a live box on the Internet yet so I am not worried about relaying, but once I figure out what I need to do I will add restrictions for protection.

Again I apologize for not responding immediately because I didn't see the notification email and hope you are still able to reply. Thanks for your assistance.

Is there a smart host configured to relay the mail too? Most of the time, the smart host will be the IP address of your internal mail servers. The important thing to remeber when setting up a smart host is that the IP must be encapsulated in brackets. Should look like this [192.168.0.111]
This tells the SMTP server to relay mail to the following smart host.

Also, the mail servers must be configured to accept mail from the IIS SMTP server.
