I have a weired problem that my IIS gets shot down by DEP and throws an error message on the screen (typical memory could not be wtitten error). I have checked event logs and there is nothing close the time stamp of error. I have even added IIS and IIS worker process in exception list of Data Execution protection. still it thorws that error that IIS shutdown by DEP. this causes my exchange emails to go down. It happens 3-4 times daily. once I click ok on the error mails strat working again. any ideas ?

DEP is most useful on systems that web browsing is run on and on which 3rd party apps are regularly installed. If your system is respected as a server and a DC, I would trade DEP for IIS stability by disabling DEP.

To do this:

Get Properties on My Computer -> Advanced -> Startup & recovery -> Setting -> Edit and change the /NoExecute setting to /NoExecute=AlwaysOff

The change will apply after a reboot.

I changed DEP to run on essential windows process and it seems that DEP message is not coming anymore. now The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
comes up. I tried inetinfo patch from MS
and
and they tell that I have newer version of software installed. i have small business server sp1. email chaos is still continued.

My feeling is that you have some 3rd-party dll running on the server related to IIS that's causing the crash. Do you have some installable web app or something that came with its own setup package?

I dont think I have any web application installed. I have quickbook installed recently but it was after this error started coming. I think I had IE7 going in last week and error statred right around that time frame. I uninstalled IE7 last night. I am gonna watch it today to see if it helps. I will post it tonite

Well I sure consider IE7 3rd party at this point! [smile] It's been causing all sorts of new support issues.

The following is a known solution to IE7 causing issues with Exchange and IIS. The main issue it was written for is the fact that IE7 causes the Exchange System Manager help to break. It may not apply to your situation, but there's a chance that it may change the behavior of IIS when IE7 is installed. It's not quite a Microsoft-approved solution yet:

--------------
The supported workaround is to remove the PSAPI.DLL from the Exchsrvr\bin subdirectory

1) Stop All Exchange and IIS services.
Stop the Exchange System Attendant Service
Stop the IIS Admin Service

2) Open a Command Prompt rename the PSAPI.DLL in the exchsrvr\bin directory. to PSAPI.DLL.OLD

3) Restart the Exchange and IIS services.
--------------

I would recommend just not reinstalling IE7 and watch stability. I've personally not allowed IE7 to install on any of the servers I manage and haven't had a single regret so far.

IE7 was the culprit. I uninstalled it and ever since I had no trouble.
