IIS hangs after windows update in VC# or Control Panel

Several times I seem to run into trouble with IIS hanging (both when opening Web applications or in the control panel) after an update to Win XP Pro via windows update.

Is this a recognised problem with others and if so is there some way around it. It has happened with VC# and now with VS.NET Pro 2003.

Any help much appreciated as at present my only solution is a lengthy reinstallation of everything. Even reinstalling IIS after removing it does not help.
