Just noticed that with some of our clients that have upgraded to IE 7, when they got to ftp://ftp.ourdomain.com, it now brings up a list of all folders in our ftp root. I have found articles on how to click on Page then view in Windows Explorer so it will prompt them for the name and password then it will bring up their normal explorer window and do what they always have. But, is there a way on our end with iis to not show them the complete ftp root when they initially connect? I've tried a few things with not allowing to list contents but then it seems to block them from even their own folder. Thanks, Joe

IE 7 really making my life hard thread41-1307966

You must be allowing anonymous login & directory viewing. IE7 connects anonymously at first. The same thing would happen with any other FTP client if connected anonymously.

Thanks for the reply. I double checked and the allow anonymous access is not checked under Security Accounts tab for the properties of our ftp site. This doesn't happen under IE 6 and below. Also, under IE 7, when I click the Page then Open Page in Windows explorer then try to logon anonymously, it does not allow me.

Somehow IIS is allowing this and shouldn't be. Do the IIS logs reveal any info after someone connects this way? When connecting to my ftp server (not IIS) using IE7 without credentials, the user simply gets a 'page can not be displayed' error which is normal if anonymous login and directory listing is truly disabled. I don't know enough about IIS, but for some reason it's giving a directory listing to [what should be an] 'anonymous' user. Perhaps, IIS is assuming an unprivledged user like 'guest' and allowing the listing based on those credentials.

Hi, I'm also having this issue with IE7 and ftp access to iis6 ,Works fine on IE6 and below :-(. Did you manage to resolve?

Kind regards, :)

I have the following problem.
My resolution is do open the required FTP site from Windows Explorer, NOT IE.
Ensure the address bar in Windows Explorer is enabled so you can type in the address of your FTP site (ftp:// or similar..)

Thanks, that might make it easier for some people. We're going to be upgrading ourr iis server to windows 2003 soon so maybe that will help.

IE7 FTP Client opens the connection in the FTP Root. You must let the root empty with read access to ftp users and create another directory where your data will be:

X:\FTP\ (root, empty)
X:\FTP_virtual_directory\ (virtual directory where data is)

If I have a user ABC, I create its folder in X:\FTP_virtual_directory\ABC

When this user login with IE7, she must type ftp://myftpsite.com/ABC otherwise she'll be in the root directory which is empty. And by the way if ABC wants to access the root from its folder, she'll find an empty folder.
