IIS 5.0 password set to expire notification

All,

I have a website running on Win2k IIS 5.0 in a Native Mode Win2k AD domain sturcture. The site is set to basic authentication with SSL.
The question I have is:

How is a user normally notified that their password is about to expire when connecting to a site through their browser, without explicit code written to do this? Is it even possible?

I have enduser complaining that they are not being prompted in advance when their passwords are about to expire.
