iimonitor on AIX error

I am not to sure how many of you use Ingres on AIX but I will give it ago.
I run a computer associates Ingres II installation on a AIX 4.3 box.
When running a dbms server monitoring utility iimonitor I receive the error below.
$ iimonitor
IIMONITOR: Syntax error detected.
IIMONITOR: Unable to open data file.
$

$ iimonitor 32795
IIMONITOR: Syntax error detected.
IIMONITOR: Unable to open data file.
$
Does anyone know what would cause this. I do have another box with same OS level that does allow me to run the exact same command.
I usually run Solaris so I am not that hot with AIX.

a sql syntax error
might be some table locked by another user - not AIX

I have checked in IPM, no locks unfortunately.

Or mutexes or damaged data etc etc (it is all in database) check "smitty errpt" - it may show if something is wrong with system
