Hi guys,

I want to appear for the PMP this year. In order to get the contact hours and prepare for the exam, I was given 2 resources - 4pm.com and IIL. I would like to know which one of them or any other that you guys found useful. Did anyone just read on their own and pass the exam?

Thanks!

Contact your local PMI chapter and talk to people there. No matter how good the courses are, it's the instructor who makes all the difference: a great course and a lousy instructor is not a combination for a great outcome.

Yes, you can do it on your own. A few do. Most don't. There's a rather obvious reason for that: the PMBOK Guide is a very structured way to manage projects; the exam tests your knowledge of that very structured way; the courses are set up to reinforce that structured approach.

Even if you take a course, consider purchasing Rita Mulcahy's book. Just make certain that it's the latest one for the recently revised exam.

Both the above courses are online. It is more self study. I agree with you totally on the instructor being good/bad. A friend paid 4000 dollars and the instructor was bad and most of the people gave up.

I might have to end up doing on my own due to the cost of the courses. I am told that the PMBOK and Rita Mulcahy's book should be enough. Is that correct?

Thanks!

You have to get the 35 contact training hours no matter which way you go.

Many PMI chapters run exam prep courses for their members - I'd talk to the members in the local PMI chapter (but now I'm repeating what I told you earlier).

As for the PMBOK Guide and Rita ... have you ever actually *read* (not just glanced through) the PMBOK Guide? Unless you are very highly motivated you'll never make it through to the end. I've never met anyone who didn't take a course but was able to pass the exam. (And, yes, I'm sure they are out there ... I just haven't met them.)

Thanks-:) One of my friends did do it. He bought 4 books since he had the required contact hours through training.

I am highly motivated. I like your advice of approaching the local chapter and see what I can get there.

Thanks a lot.
