Hi all.
Im administrating a MAN with about 700 nodes. The edge switches we use are mostly 420s. Lately, we have been experiencing problems with the 420s, some of them keep rebooting all the time, and some of them work fine, i.e you can browse the internet and download files when connected to the switch and all, but we cannot ping the switch's IP. We are currently using 3.0.0.46 SW. Now the strange part of this is that the "cure" for this problem so far has been disabling IGMP snooping on all VLANS on these proplem switches. Anyone know of any known bugs? I've tried different SWversions but the problem will not go away. Is there any limit on how many switches you can have in one VLAN? We use the same management VLAN for all switches...

I would really really really appreciate if anyone has any input, or has had the same problem.

-Cheers, Niklas

Do the ping's come and go on the 420's? Do you use IGMP or is it on because that is the default?

No, the pings dont come and go, they disappear completely. We dont use IGMP, but the snooping is per default on. And if you add a new VLAN to a switch, it has IGMP snooping and proxy on, and you have to turn it off manually, or the switch will go down...And when we turn IGMP off at one switch, it seems as the problem just jumps to another switch in the MAN...this is turning into a bit of a problem for us...

It seems that the baystack units, 420, 450 and so on communicate with each other at level 2, does anyone know anything about that?

While it does not quite sound the same, there is a known problem with IGMP and MAC addresses being learned on the wrong switch. We are/were suffering disappearing device pings, and we would see the MAC being learned on the "wrong" port on the 8600. I don't know the Nortel CR number, but Nortel has identified a problem. It is fixed in Boss3.06.08(BPS,470,460) and 4.4 on the 450's. I don't have any 420's but I am going to assume that they suffer the same problem. You may try to contact Nortel and see if the 420's are included in the IGMP problem.

I hope this is helpful...

Yeah, we are currently in contact with nortel about this problem, and its only on the 420s we're experiencing this. Thanx for your input though, its good to know Im not alone with this issue =)
