ifconfig syntax problems

I am having difficulty making some ifconfig changes. I followed all the syntax examples I can get my hands on and none seem to take. Most will just sit idle for 10 to 20 minutes and then show no changes.
I must be missing something. HELP!

can you please post what the exact ifconfig command is that you are trying to do?

ifconfig lan0 inet (ipaddress) netmask (255.255.255.0)

that looks ok, what about any errors? it sounds like after you have typed this, there are no errors displayed. You can always change this in SAM as well. Is this a startup issue?
