*we are using quark 6 on mac OS X
here's what we have to do:
we get quark files on cd with multiple fonts, open them and extract the text, save the text into ms word, send it off to french translators who work in windows so we can't include the fonts, then we get the text back in ms word but only as one font, then we have to insert the text back into quark. this takes forever because we have to cut and paste every line that has a different font. plus, if we have to make adjustments (like adding an accent to a letter) to the text after we have inserted it back into quark, the font changes for some reason.
is there an easier/faster way of doing this without having these problems? is there an extension available?

I suppose part of the problem is that information is getting taken out too early in the process. When you bring the text into Word, try to keep as much style information as possible. It doesn't have to be the same font, but just enough to be able to automate some of the process later on. You might want to do a search for Quark tags, or use an intermediate format, such as HTML, that both programs can access.

Whatever you do, you'll need some co-operation with your translators. They have to be made aware that the styles must remain the same. Using tags, whether Quark tags, HTML, or XML means that you can do a simple find & replace in a text editor to set the whole document (assuming you use style sheets in Quark). If you learn AppleScript, you can probably automate the process even more, and if you're really brave, read up on Quark's XML functions.

Having said all that, it sounds like the kind of task that someone will have written an XTension for. However, if your translators remove all formatting, there's not much that can be done...

What if you found a universal font ie. times,
or something with the same charactor set.
OpenType fonts are suppose to be cross platform.

Anyway get the translators to use just the one font.
While making sure your keeping all the accents etc.

One way to keep the accents etc. is to copy and paste the text from Word to Quark on a PC (if you can access it... the local printer should have both) Then open the file on the mac. Style sheets in Quark can save alot of time if set up properly.
