i recently installed a piece of software that didn't contain an uninstall function; nor did it show up on the Add/Remove programs page.

i subsequently deleted the directories that the program was contained i.

my problem, however, is that when i reset the pc someone - somewhere is requesting the .exe file to be run. i've checked all the startup directories and there's no reference to this file and i've also done a search for all files containing the ctb.exe command line - to no avail?

before i get to the point of just painting over the darned "cant find ctb.exe" prompt EVERY time i logon any ideas where this programme may be being called from?

cheers

Make sure you check all of the profiles for the startup files. You may also want to check the registry to get an idea where the commands may be hiding. I am sure that you have heard the warnings about modifying the registry.

cheers. it was in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEWindows/CurrentVersion/Run section within the registry - overlooked that one!

thanx muchly )

There is Four other places you should check..

1. Since it did not show up in Add/Remove I would check 'WIN.INI' the load or run lines

2. Second Check Autoexec / Config.sys

3. Third Check the Registry as per 'tclere' but also check the HKEY_Users. Checking both your login ID & .Default user.

4 Last if it is not found in any of the above it is a left over DLL the is loading into Memory on bootup from the 'SYSTEM' or 'SYSTEM32' directories.. Lotsa luck finding that one without a 'SYSDIFF' run before the software install...

What is the SYSDIFF command?
