I have an existing NT domain and a brand new Linux box I just threw together. I want to use a laser jet that is hanging off an NT box on the network.

All I want to know is do I need to install anything on the NT box to work? I know i'll have to put samba on my linux box, but I'm unsure of whether I need to put anything on any other boxes.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I believe, if I remember correctly, that you do not have to install anything on the NT box if the Linux client is using SAMBA.

The other option is to have the printer share except lpr requests and then you can use 'lpr -P printershare@server' to print.

Hi,

As long as you can print to the printer from NT then its easy to use from Linux. You just share the printer in NT in the usual way (control panel, printers, right-click on printer - select sharing). Then as long as you have samba active you can just set up a remote print queue to \\ntbox\prtname . On redhat its easiest with the graphical 'printconf-gui' utility. See -->
If the printer has a jet direct card or is otherwise 'network ready', you can configure it to support direct printing using the lpr protocol. In this case you'd just set up a remote 'unix' printer using the ip address & port of the HP. See --> .

Hope this helps

I note your answers indicate a knowledge of Linux and Windows connectivity.. Could you advise me?
I want to connect a linux box to my windows machine. So far I can see the Linux box in the network, but I cant access it. I can browse part of the linux box.. that is the default.html page but thats all. At one time I cluld ping both ways OK but after a few changes..... I'm back at the begining. I have played around with the samba config file and some changes seem to do more but not all of what I need.

Note also; I could never see the windows box from the linux network browser and in fact I don't seem to be able to browse the linux box from the blinux browse network option!
can'f find localhost error.

Many thanks.... Mike
