Worth passing around to others!

Absolutely brilliant and so correct.

I hate clients that say they don't really know what they want then start picking everything apart when you present them with something.

Even worse are the ones that give you a detailed spec then when you have completed it suddenly decide they want something completely different and don't expect to pay for the changes!!

Enjoyable and apt reading, thanks SPYDERIX.

I get that all the time and I can't stand it. Therefore I personally no longer do design as a result and stick to backend coding instead.

I even get problems with the backend coding sometimes. Remarks like "oh and if it could do this as well....." and no extra money of course!!!

Life would be so much better if it wasn't for the clients!!!

Ya I get coding requests like that too sometimes. Often if it's something simple I don't care but if it's something major then I can look that's not part of the original agreement and it's going to cost you more. Then there's lots of bitching and compromising that they try to do to get what they want but in a different manner that's often more complicated and more confusing than if they just pay a little more.

True, little changes are all part and parcel of designing a system so I have no problem with that. It's just when they want something big doing and don't expect to pay extra.

Also,I am constantly amazed when they give you a spec to quote on and then expect to get it done for peanuts. They obviously don't realise how much work it takes to build systems. That's why I always ask for a budget now and then tell them if what they want is reasonable.

I also hate how people want a "ball park estimate" and then try to hold you to it, even if they add on tons of stuff. I refuse to give estimates now b/c of that. If they want a quote they need to tell me everything they want in detail and then I need to work it out. Sometimes they don't give you all the details about something too. Makes it very frustrating.

I remember one client who asked for something to collect a separate list of email addresses of the people who bought from him so it could be imported into Outlook. He also wanted an interface so someone from the office at his company could login from the web and see the saved addresses, download the file if desired, and delete the file if desired. When he was presented with the bill for the work, he complained and said he thought that "you could just flip a switch" to accomplish this. I commented that first I had to BUILD the switch to his exact specifications before it could be flipped, and that's where the cost came in.

That is a very good statement. Well put.
