IEEE HardDisk hangs

Hi,
I have purchased a 20gb Lacie External harddisk and it partitions and formats fine. It is connected Via IEEE port on a laptop and takes mains power.
My problem is that it hangs the computer (OS Win 98SE) about 2 minutes into any large file transfir onto it. This only happens on copys of over about 200mb, smaller files work fine.
I hope that the problem is just a buffer setting or something - Please help. :-(
