Hi pechenegs, I'm glad it worked. Since I know that you work with many third party security tools, I just wanted to point out that this condition (and many similar ones) are often caused by 3rd party security utilities. While the intent is good - to protect these registry keys from changes caused by malware, some inadvertently also 'protect' these keys from being changed as required for normal operation.
Yes I agree, I did tend to play with a lot of HIPS programs and probably uninstalled one forgetting to switch off it's features, which has meant no run written to the registry.
However, I have uninstalled all HIPS ( apart from online armor which I got a free years subscription for Online armor's security suite of Firewall, anti virus and HIPS ) and my machine is a lot faster, I guess I'll either have to live with it or reinstall!
