IE8 sooo slooooooow

I don't have a particularly fast machine but IE7 ran perfectly on it and opened in less than a second.

However, I'm now using IE8 and it's very slow by comparison, taking up to 15 seconds to open - even if an instance of it is already running - and even starting a new tab takes several seconds.

Can anyone suggest any tweaks that might speed it up, or does anyone know what it's doing that takes such a long time?

Start by re-registering the main dll's using this utility

If that doesn't help, try IE in no add-ons mode. Right click on the IE desktop icon and select 'browse without add-ons'.

I went back to IE7 but I just found an article on the Spybot S&D site which infers that it's their immunization procedure that causes the slow start-up of IE8.

Just in case anyone else has the same problem...

Yes, both Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster unneccesarily put thousands of entries in the Restricted Sites zone. This can slow down IE8's performance. If this is the problem, you can still use IE8 with these programs, just turn off the immunize feature and delete the entries from the restricted sites zone.

It is a naturally slow browser. As someone who has many web browsers to test out different web sites, I can say that IE6 is by far the fastest out of 6, 7, and 8.

In fact, in speed tests for 10 major browsers, IE 7 and IE 8 are 10th and 9th in the list, respectively:

How is IE7 able to load the Spybot lists in reasonable time when IE8 is so slow? MS must have known that many users use Spybot and SpywareBlaster. I stick with IE7. If someone has taken the trouble to identify places where bad stuff exists, why ignore it?

The static lists used by Spybot and SpywareBlaster are no longer the ideal protection against malicious sites, in my opinion. IE8 has more reliable protections against malicious sites built-in, such as per-site ActiveX, ActiveX opt-in, DEP/NX, Protected Mode, and SmartScreen Filter. So smah's advice to "just turn off the immunize feature and delete the entries from the restricted sites zone" seems reasonable

In addition to strongm's thoughts:

Look at what Conflicker did. It generated hundreds of random domain names per day - there's no way to be able to block all these possibilities with 'restricted sites' entries.

I have speeded up the launch of IE8 by going into my SpywareBlaster, selecting "Protection Status", clicking on "Restricted Sites" and then clicking on "Resticted Sites Protection". This unchecks all the "Item Names" and seems to remove them from IE8's list.
I then simply closed SpywareBlaster and I found IE8 behaved more reasonably.
