IE8 prevents hibernation

I have been having problems with getting XP to hibernate. The 'sleep' button on the keyboard only works occasionally, sometimes even Start->Turn off computer->Hibernate doesn't work. It has been suggested that some program or other that is running is stopping the process. The guilty party appears to be IE8.

I frequently have multiple tabs running in IE8. It appears that, after a lengthy session in which I have been ducking between tabs and searching for different things, IE8 gets a bit tongue-tied. The situation is exacerbated is I have multiple copies of IE8 up at one time as often happens (some sites open with a new copy rather than in a new tab).

Has anyone else had this problem, and, if so, how have you solved it?

My problem continues and compounds.

I am getting frequent screen siezures. The graphics display allows an application to appear on screen, prohibits any interface with it, and will not minimize it.

The only solution I have discovered is to open Task Manager and keep on eliminating iexplore.exe until everything runs again.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

It doesn't sound familiar, but for troubleshooting purposes start by running IE in no add-ons mode (start, run, iexplore.exe -extoff, OK). If the problem goes away, an IE add-on is the culprit.

Thanks smah - I tried that but couldn't find any difference. I did find, however, that there are a huge number of add-ons I know nothing about.

My IE8 problems persist - here is the latest (ten minutes ago) example:
While the other apps are working fine, IE8 sits on my screen and will not renew its GUI. If I maximise another application over IE8 then minimise it, then the image of the application remains in the screen area covered by IE8. -- Curiouser and curiouser! At the time I had one copy of IE in use (with three tabs). To clear up matters I had to remove TEN copies using Windows Task Manager!

The only thing that comes to mind is a complete, clean re-installation. Is this possible, and if so then how?

Hi OfficeAnimal,

Your post of 12 Aug 2010 is EXACTLY my problem ! I also get the Hibernate (lack of) problem you mentioned on 24 July, except that mine is the Timer-driven function which isn’t working (until I shut IE down – then it works OK again).

Like you, I am convinced it is an IE8 problem but, in my case, that it was introduced with some fixes installed by Windows Automatic Update on 16 Oct. These were ……

KB 2360131
KB 2289187
KB 2387149
KB 2279986
KB 2345886
KB 2296011
KB 982132
KB 2378111
KB 2344875
KB 2345043
KB 2344911
KB 979687
KB 2410707
KB 890830
KB 981957
KB 2344893
KB 2360937

I have backed off the first 2 (the most obvious candidates) but this hasn’t made any difference ! If you can shed any light on any of these updates (e.g. did any of these hit your PC just before your problems started ? etc.) or you have managed to solve your problem I would be most interested to hear from you.

Cheers,

Ian14.

Hi OfficeAnimal,

An update to my post of 8 Dec 2010 ................... IT APPEARS I HAVE NOW SOLVED MY IE8 (FAILURE TO) HIBERNATE PROBLEM !!!

I started backing off fixes from the list above (one at a time) and when I removed KB 2279986 Hibernate started working properly again. The fact that this fix has now been removed from Windows Automatic Update appears to confirm my suspicions !

I found that removing it also greatly improves (but does not completely eliminate) the problem with IE8 hangs, although another fix which I also removed (KB 2360131 - which is in the right area) could be implicated, as this has now been WITHDRAWN by Microsoft and superseded by a composite update.

I hope this helps with your problem.

Good luck,

Ian14.
