IE8 has access to Windows updates blocked after malware disinfection

IE8 cannot reach

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

The malware infection has been cleaned but there is a legacy of inaccessible sites, notably the Windows update site.

Automatic updates has also been sabotaged.

I need to know where to look to remove the blocking information.

Have you checked your hosts file to ensure there are no malicious entries redirecting you away from these legitimate sites?

Not sure which OS you are running, but chances are the path to the file will be C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
