I'm having a problem that many seem to have experienced with IE due to the searches I've done, whether it be in XP or Vista or 7, but none of the suggested fixes have worked for me.

I can't print a webpage or do a print preview or view an .html document with IE8 and since this is Windows 7, I can't downgrade to IE7. Firefox works fine, but the point is, is that I want to fix it, lol. I posted a URL to give an example of what a print preview looks like. When I try to open my ftp site, I click on page and then click on the option to open the ftp site in windows explorer and I get a box telling me that it can't be opened.

I've been searching the web and trying the various fixes and so far have done the following with no luck.

1. Installed and uninstalled the Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer tool.
2. Reset IE settings
3. Went to control panel and clicked on the side panel where it gives you the option to turn windows programs on and off and I unchecked IE8, restarted, and then turned it back on.
4. I used to have AVG installed, but it has since been uninstalled. However, I installed it again and then uninstalled it because some people had experienced the problem with AVG.
5. I unchecked the box in internet options that says "enable protected mode."

All of this with no luck. I will gladly and happily answer any questions that you may have if someone could be willing to help me out if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

Forgot to mention that I also tried "safe mode with networking" and I get the same results. Thanks!

Ever since FTP capability was removed from IE way back when, why even bother with IE for FTP needs? It only ends up opening Windows Explorer anyway, so try starting directly from Windows Explorer. Just open Computer (or any other windows explorer window) and type the ftp address into the address bar - no IE required.

The printing thing is almost always caused by Microsoft Inventory Analyzer. Since you've tried several other combinations, I's suggest that you try to install MS IA again, reboot and then remove it. Perhaps the part that causes this problem with IE wasn't completely removed due to some IE upgrade or change at some intermediate point in time.

Is this two issues here or are they connected? You mention that you cannot get IE 8 to open your FTP Site. You also have a problem with Print Preview in IE 8, is that from a file on your FTP site, or is that on a web page from any site?

To Connect to the ftp folder in Vista:

1. Open Internet Explorer
2.In the address field, enter (for example an ftp address ftp://ftp.ecgraphics.biz)
3. Click the "Go Button"
4. Click on the View tab at the top of Internet Explorer
5. Click on Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer
6. In Vista a new window will open. Right click in the white field and scroll down to the login tab, click on Login As...
7. In the Login Box for User name type in the details:
8. You are now ready to drag and drop your files on the white field in the window.

Have you tested IE8 Print Preview from a different user?

Repair IE8 (IE7)

I can view a print preview or print a webpage or print something from the web using the Adobe PDF print option while using Firefox, but I can't do any of this with IE8.

As far as FTP, I use Core FTP program, but I use to be able to do it through IE. I tried your way Linney and I also tried smah's suggestion of not going through the web browser, but opening just a folder and typing the ftp address, but when I put in my login I get, "can't open FTP in windows exlorer."

Linney, I'm assuming that the same problem is causing all of these issues. I really don't care so much about the inability to FPT through Windows Explorer, but I would like the ability to print a webpage or do a print preview through IE or even print to Adobe through IE, but I can't do either. I can't preview any .html document that I've created through IE either.

I reinstalled MSIA and rebooted per Smah's suggestion and then uninstalled with no success.

Someone in some older forum I was reading suggested that there was a folder called "Low" that was missing from the temp folder and that they added it and fixed their problem. I do have the "Low" folder, but if you look at the URL of the example that I posted, you can see at the bottom of the blank print preview that it does not point to a folder called "low." Does this make sense?

I'm at a loss, but will keep trying, lol. Thanks!

What is your default browser, is it Firefox or IE? Does it make any difference if you swap them around?

Did you test with another user?

Can IE save a web page to an E-mail?

In the "Turn Windows features on or off" is the heading Internet Information Services, and the sub-headings concerning FTP set correctly?

Have you tried the System File Checker?

How to repair the operating system and how to restore the operating system configuration to an earlier point in time in Windows Vista

Have you checked the Event Viewer for any errors which might be relevant?

The last article on this page mentions "System Diagnostics: Generate a system health report", see if you can run that and gain any insight to your problems.

Finding Vista's Advanced Tools

Sorry for all the Vista references but Vista and Windows 7 are pretty similar and the articles apply equally.

Linney, I noticed the other day that in "turn windows services on and off," that nothing under Internet Information Services was checked. Which ones should I check?

I have swapped default browsers with no luck. Same thing happens with a different user. I run the sfc /scannow also with no luck.

I think that checking the right boxes may help in control panel, but I didn't want to check all of them if it wasn't necessary. If you know which ones would be ideal, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

the IIS components are for servers. Unless you are running your own server, there is nothing there that you need.

Does 'no luck' with SFC mean that it completed correctly but did not report any problems?

If other user accounts have the same problems and traditional repair tools are not able to fix the problem, it might be time to do a repair installation

Smah could be right about IIS, when I check my machine, the headings for Internet Information Services are all unchecked, but I don't have anything to do with FTP or Servers.

Hi,
I tried BigBen's suggestion (or rather the post that he gave in the above reply) by running the following as administrater

"icacls C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp\Low /setintegritylevel (OD)(CI)low"

The result I get is "0 files processed successfully. Failed Processing 1 files."

I know that were running out of options. I tried running a repair install, but I updated this Toshiba Laptop from a free upgrade disc provide by Toshiba. I completely erased Vista though and did a clean install, but I can't run the disk from within Windows without going through some Toshiba program that searches for Vista and it says that some file isn't found. So I can't really do a repair install.

I have one more thing that I would like for you guys to look at.

Since this problem occured, I can't print an e-mail with any method either, as you see here with Adobe through Windows Live Mail. But why does it print the header of an e-mail?

I thought maybe this would provide some insight.

Thanks for the help guys. I may just have to use Firefox for my web printing needs.

If resetting the security to default doesn't improve the situation you might have to get back to Toshiba with a view of reinstalling Vista, followed once more by upgrading to Windows 7. A clean install of Vista immediately followed by an upgrade to Windows 7 would almost be the same as a clean install of just Windows 7. Almost.

Does the folder C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp\Low exist and do you have any problem accessing it? You could also look at cleaning out all the folders and files in the actual Temp folder that Windows will allow you to delete.

Other things that you can look at.

Safe Mode with Networking you have already tried but as a lot of Microsoft Services don't run in Safe Mode did you take the next step and try this article?

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

I do see around the traps people having various problems with Adobe software and Windows 7.

If it was just a printing problem the notes by bcastner in this old XP thread might be worth a read.

I run the "fixit" security utility but it said it wasn't applicable to my pc, so I did it manually. Now (as it said might happen), my other user account isn't available from the login screen and I can't pull it up.

The suggested command to fix it doesn't work. Any ideas on how to add it back? Thanks.

Can you add your user back into Users in the Local Users and Groups in Computer Management?

Why does the suggested command not work? Is there some error message?
