IE7 released

Cool. Wonder how many probs it will have. Being a web designer though I think I'll stick with IE 6 for now for browser compatibility. I don't expect everyone to switch right away anyway.

Oh I'll def. check it out. But on a seperate machine. I'll need to be able to view both unless I can install a seperate install of this and use either one. Doubt that will work though.

You could install both with the beta's of IE7 (with a bit of a hack to the registry) so you may be able to do it with the full version.

IE6 & IE7 are not intended to run side by side. Some people have had some success, others problems. It's safer to use a seperate machine (if available) or a virtual machine if you want to have access to both versions of IE.

Just thought i'd give you guys a quick run down on my first impressions of this new version of IE.

I played around with some of the Beta test versions and was not all that impressed, but this full release seems to be reasonably water tight, it took an ice age to install, i was sat here for quite some time.

Now that its up and running, it seems to behave (from a design point of view) pretty much identical to the latest edition of FF.

I've check through a few of my sites on it, and i'm pleasantly supprised that in general they work better and my CSS is interpreted as intended without lots of silly hacks for different browsers.

This is good new for me as I loath having to run FF and all that rubbish, ol' Gates was dragged over the hot coals by netscape back in 97 for monopolizing the browser market, but you have to agree, having somthing come built into the OS when you buy it does make good sense.

I have to say I am quite disappointed with IE7. I mean, yeah the ripped off the look and feel (and even some features) from FF, they claim IE7 will be more secure (*rolls eyes*)...but what upset me the most was how some web sites don't render fine in IE7 as it used to in IE6.

The new IE7 doesn't render some CSS styles which causes much frustration. Anyone here experience this issue?

GUJU

Can you be more specific about what CSS isn't working properly?

This is exactly why I didn't want to dl this right away. If I got it to work for IE7 who knows what it would look like under IE6 (which the majority of the population have) therefore rendering the site useless to so many potential visitors/customers.

IE6 will not be the majority for very long... MS will make it available for download as part of the Windows Update program within 2 weeks. At that stage we'll see our logs show less and less IE6 and the numbers replaced with IE7.

My experience to date shows that very very very very little needs to change between a Standards compliant Firefox-happy website and an IE7 website (unlike the massive hacks required to make IE6 work).

Firefox 2.0 is released today... we'll see what kind of fuss that creates.

Cheers,
Jeff

Not quite (though I suppose that depends on what day you read this post). It's due to come out tomorrow (24th October), at at 1700 PST (0100 BST) to be precise.

At least that's what the BBC are reporting: . I couldn't find anything about it on a brief scan of the Mozilla site.

I'd like to hear a litte more about GUJU's issues with CSS in IE7, I've been using it since the first BETA version and cant see that there are any issues, It appears to render pretty much in the same manor as FF.

Minor CSS differences,

for the coder, if you hold tight to your doctype, you wont see too much change.

ive been on ie7 beta for about 3 months, on my production machine to see what affect it would have. takes some gettting used to from the user perspective, but many sites visited, and looks just fine.

i have had times where it looked great on ie7, and had a bud open it on ie6, and was shocked, but that was before i learned about doctype and css coexistence.

i go home at night to ie6 and find myself missing ie7. now that its released, ill install at home.

just my 2 pennies
