I recently updated a 5 year old pc with Service pack 3 after the user was complaining of her pc shutting down on its own on irregular intervals and it running VERY slow. I removed her Norton Internet Security suite and installed AVG in its place. After doing a scan, defrag, computer clean, the user complains that her IE shows a blank screen and can't reach the internet. The other computers on the network can reach the internet. Any suggestions?

A couple:

- Check network connectivity
- Check IP/proxy settings.

Cheers,
Dian

Yes sounds like you may have spyware on the machine. Download a few spyware tools them make sure they all have the latest definitions and run through. Examples to download maybe, malwarebytes, spybot, ad-aware, windows defender, hi-jack this. Change the homepage to open with nothing as well. Also make sure machine has all windows updates, you may have to run some tools through from windows safe mode before vital services are run to get the best results.

The connectivity issue is taken care of, but she will surf the net for awhile then IE freezes to the point where we can't end task.

It might be worth if you haven't already to delete temporary internet files and cookies, reset IE under tools, internet options, advanced. Also check event log for any events concerning IE which may give further details. Try installing Firebox and see if the same thing happens after a period of time as this will determine if its the browser or the PC as a whole causing the issue.

When IE freezes is it always the same website that is freezing? At the time of the freeze is the site that is being accessed a Flash site or Java applet running anywhere on the page, as it could be an issue with plug in's as well.

Also try creating a new user in XP or Vista whichever you have installed. Then test IE does the problem still happen with a new user profile created ??
