I've just installed IE7 and I can't stand the wishy washy look of the fonts, how do I change it? I've looked at fonts on the tools menu but that doesn't have the option to turn off this TTF effect on the font. I'm getting a headache just typing this post!

It's not the font that it's using, it's the fact that IE7 turns "Clear Type" font smoothing on by default, regardless of which system-wide setting you've selected.

Many people are unaware of the existence of Clear Type (which is nobody's fault but Microsoft's) and would benefit from switching it on. Others, like 1DMF have problems with it (I read somewhere that it tends to looks good on flat screen monitors but bad on CRTs). I suppose that's why the IE7 guys wanted to use it, but it's bad form to override system-wide preferences IMO. See
Anyway, here's an answer from :
E7 enables 'clear type'. You can turn it off via the runonce page that appears the first time you start IE7. If you have left it on, and decide that you don't like it, turn it off via Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Multimedia tab.

There was a bug where ClearType continues to affect OE even when disabled. If you are affected by this navigate to key:

HKCU\Identities\{56561DBF-E736-4516-B63E-80BB99D3E6AD}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\Trident\Main\

Create STRING UseClearType if it does not exist. Set value to no.
