IE7 Crashing on Startup 1

Greetings.

Yesterday I finally decided to let automatic updates install IE7 on my fully patched XP SP2 system. Installation went fine, however when I start the browser it attempts to configure default settings (default search engine) by connecting to runonece.msn.com/runonce2.aspx. It brings up the page OK and then crashes.

Application event log shows paired Event ID's 1000 & 1001:

Event 1000:
Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.5730.11, faulting module mshtml.dll, version 7.0.5730.11, fault address 0x000c4c9e.

Event 1001:
Fault bucket 337270496.

I am however able to use IE7 by going to MS Update and then purring in another URL (such as and clicking on GO. Then it works OK.

Any ideas how to overcome this problem or convince IE7 to skip the runonce stuff would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Jock

Hi, smah

Great, many thanks. Now I can at least see if it is just something with that page.

I tried the registry settings Smah kindly provided, which did indeed enable me to go to my normal home page in IE (Google.com) on startup. Sadly, it then crashes after displaying the Google page. So it isn't the firstuse stuff.

Also disabled all malware protection as suggested in that link. No effect there either. Scripts are enabled, or at least they used to be.

So, thinking it might be a corrupt user profile (them being so delicate and all), I tried IE7 under another user profile on the same machine.

Sure enough, it works. Went thru the first use stuff fine and runs no problem.

So, I guess that's it and I'll have to migrate to a new one.

Wht's different about the profiles? Are you using google desktop?

Hi, Smah

The two logons are the same - both local admin accounts, machine is not in a domain. The profile where IE7 dnw's is the main user. The other profile was as created at installation, so lower resolution desktop and it is using the standard XP scheme whereas the main user uses Windows Classic.

Internet connectivity, devices etc are all the same.

Google desktop is installed, but I believe only for the main user. Do you know of issues there?

Your support is greatly appreciated.

Hi, Smah

GDS it was! Turned it off and IE7 loads OK.

I checked the release notes for IE& which say earlier versions would cause IE to hang when opening tabs.

I will check GDS tomorrow and either update or reconfigure it.

Thanks for your help!

I don't use it, so my wording might not be right:

There's an option index IE's history files or some such thing. Turn that option off & you'll be able to use Google Desktop. I don't know if there's an update to correct this problem, but there may be. It's often characterized by IE crashing when leaving a site, and it's not always repeatable. It has something to do with the timing of Google Desktop indexing & IE's writing of its history.

That should actually say "often characterized by IE crashing when leaving a site or closing a tab"

When you find that option, please post back with exactly what it's called & where it is so I don't sound so silly when trying to describe it. [ponder]

Hi, Smah

Yes you were exactly right. I turned off the indexing of web history and that solved it, so GDS is also working now.

To turn it off, go to Google Desktop Search preferences and in the Search Types section remove the check on "Web History".

The interesting implication of this is that when you use IE7 to go to Windows Update, it must not be creating web history or somehow keeps GDS from interfering - maybe some specific code there.
