Gates Highlights Progress on Security, Outlines Next Steps for Continued Innovation

"We're installing Windows XP SP2 companywide on over 50,000 desktops because we recognize that its security enhancements are significant. As the frequency of attacks against computer systems increases, it's becoming critically important to have our systems protected against hackers, viruses and other security risks," said Joseph Martella, director of End User Computing, Product Engineering at Merrill Lynch.

Building on those advancements, Gates announced Internet Explorer 7.0, designed to add new levels of security to Windows XP SP2 while maintaining the level of extensibility and compatibility that customers have come to expect. Internet Explorer 7.0 will also provide even stronger defenses against phishing, malicious software and spyware. The beta release is scheduled to be available this summer.

i saw something about this on the register earlier today confirming Q2 2005 beta, and it will be included with Longhorn

I wonder if it is any good ?

We'll see. I'm more concerned with what the new security features will "break" for legit users.

Damned hackers anyway. But it it wasn't for hackers, spammers, lawyers, and politicians we'd be fighting off cave bears, sabretoothed tigers, and stampeding mastodons.

I was just about to post about this, does anyone know if this will be made available on Win2k?
I wonder if it's a big rewrite like IIS6 or just an improved version of the XP SP2 version.

I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out - Bill Hicks

It is not part of Longhorn, although it borrows from the IE version being written for Longhorn.

It is for licensed owners of Windows XP Service upgrade to Pack 2 only. (Similar to the way the version of IE was upgraded in Service Pack 2 for XP but not for other Windows versions).

Mike Nash at a press conference today: "Microsoft today is also committing to deliver a new version of Internet
Explorer for Windows XP customers. This version, called IE 7, will add new levels of security to Windows XP SP2 while maintaining the level of extensibility and compatibility customers have come to expect from IE.

IE 7 will build on and broaden the progress made in SP 2, while putting in place even stronger defenses against phishing, malware and spyware.

A beta version of IE 7 will be available this summer with the final version shipping once IE 7 meets the quality standards our customers demand."
