IE6 Won't display web pages

I'm got win xp Pro running on my laptop with ie6..... I've got a cable modem for internet connection and it won't let me see web pages.... i can ping everything in the world at the command prompt i can tracert everything i've tried release/renew....I've changed everysetting in ie6 to match some of the other compters here at home and it still won't display them.....i get a dns error message at the bottom.....what it the world am i doing wrong? all my other computers work just fine....but my laptop is the only one with win xp on it any ideas would be good...thanks
 
Try typing in a site's IP address (e.g. 207.46.134.222 for If there's just something amiss with DNS translation, you should be able to get to the site.
If that doesn't work, try installing another browser (Opera is a relatively small download) and see if that works.
 
I've tried that too and it still won't go through..... I know it's something wrong with explorer but I don't know if it's defective? or if i just need to re-install it or some kind of bug
