I've deleted all my temporary internet files and ran a virus check successfully. I have plenty of RAM and HD space. Yet, every time I try to right-click and "Save As" in IE, the browser hangs and I have to force-quit back to windows. This also happens if I try and use the File menu to get ot "Save As".

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank-you.

In Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions", to see if some other program is causing IE to crash.

Specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off.

You can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

(where c: represents your Windows installation drive).

You will need to have your XP CD available. If you re-install remember to update it.

Using SFC /Scannow at the command prompt will help in repairing IE.

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP (Q318378)

I had the issue, and a MS Newsgroup post by Allan Edwards helped me:

Did you try "Error locating Object Handler"

It is similar to a standard response of mine for .exe files:
If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed. The key does not normally exist.

My own thoughts to add to this:

. Running GetRight, Download Accelerator or similar? Try it without them enabled;
. IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, uncheck "Use Third-Party Browser Extensions" and reboot.

1) I unchecked all third-party extensions. I only have Internet Download Manager. The problem still occured.

2) I ran SFC /Scannow. The problem still exists.

3) I used regedit to reinstall IE6 and Windows Update to update everything. The problem still persists.

4) I tried reinstalling using rundll32.exe... command from above and the problem still persists.

I have discovered that the crash only occurs with the "Save Picture As" command when I right-click. I can copy and paste the picture and save target works as well. Testing has been limited to .gifs.

Strange...

See Doug Knox's site, XP Fixes, and repair the File associations for .fig .jpg .jpef .tif, etc.

These can be difficult to trace if you added a program to associate with certain file extensions, and then removed it or it is for any reason not available.

Here is a reasonably direct route to the fixes:

Well, this is crazy. I tried fixing the file associations but the problem still persisted.

I decided to reinstall XP and IE and the problem is still there.

I guess I'll just copy and paste instead.

Was that a reformat and clean install or just a repair installation. If it was a repair installation then many errors in the registry may have been carried over.

If it was a clean install then perhaps you should look at third party software (including but not limited to Firewalls and Anti Virus programs) which might be causing a conflict.
