>:-< Why does my IE6 take 12 seconds or longer to start up?

I'm using Windows 2000 (Rev 5 SP2) on a new Dell Latitude laptop. It has 256MB of RAM, the disk is 50% full and not fragmented.

Cleaning out the cache does not help.
Re-installing IE6 does not help.
Outlook Express loads fast (<2 seconds).
Outlook loads fast (<3 seconds).

Can anyone suggest a solution ?

Thanks,

Update:

I have tried setting my home page to blank and it still takes >12 seconds to load IE6.

I think its just IE6, I have a similar problem at home, IE6 takes a while to load up, but at work, IE6 takes no time at all...
What internet sevice are you using?? i have AOL... I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

I am using Adelphia over a cable modem. In general, performance is OK (i.e. 1500 kbps download as measured by
But you have given me an idea. I'll disable the LAN and try dial-up to see if that changes anything. It's not anything that I would want to live with, but it might point to a network problem rather than a program problem.

Thanks

I had a similar problem, finally downloaded Ad Aware, ran that and removed a large number of items and problem was solved.

Original poster update:

I appreciate all the suggestions. I have downloaded Ad Aware and deleted 30 some odd 'spyware' modules. While it didn't seem to help, I at least learned more about spyware.

I did add -nohome to the target field of my IE6 shortcut, as in:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" –nohome

This allows me to start IE without immediately going to my home page. I can still press the "home" icon and go there.

IE load performance has improved. I occasionally have to wait, but not always.

Just a passing shot. Is the option to "automatically detect settings" unchecked? joegz
"Sometimes you just need to find out what it's not first to figure out what it is."

Yes, "automatically detect settings" is unchecked. Just for grins, I check it. Didn't make a difference.
