IE6 really slow when typing URL

Occaisionally when entering a URL in IE6 what I type in a second or so, take up to twenty seconds or more to appear character by character. This doesnt happen all the time, but it has happened on three different ISP connections (2*56k and ADSL) on this pc.
I am running XP Pro and have automatic updates switched on. Also I usually have a number of copies of IE6 running at the same time.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Is there a simple solution?

The only time I have found that particular problem is when HDD have gone into standby mode when pc has been standing idle for a while. It's not a lie if you believe it!
