Windows XP with Office 2002, IE6.1
P4 1.8g with 256 megs ram (Dell Box and default Dell Install)

This has happened before (on another PC) and the only way around it was to wipe the machine. Here is the delimma:

Open up any website that has Javascript in the page. It seems Javascript is not executing. The wierd thing is that if I go to Help/About IE, it has No version, cypher, product or update info.. they are all blank.

Before anyone says run windows update, think about it.

What I've done so far:

- Checked, screwed with all forms of the security settings in the IE control panel
- Made sure that everything scripting related has been activated
- Looked at registry settings to make sure the users have full access to things
- Ran Jview to see what version; has the most up to date version (I know this is JAVA not jscript..)
- Tried removing IE from the machine, using control panels. Through windows components and anything inside the add remove programs part. It just removes the icons -- but the browser still comes up if I try a IE shortcut.
- I ran sfc /scannow to check to see if ther was any files that were the wrong versions etc.
- I tried to re-installed IE6 (windows/inf/ie.inf) right click and install
- If I try running IE6SP1.exe setup file it complains that there is a newer version on the PC, even after I uninstall it.
- I removed any startup shortcut items, boot items and misc software that is not needed. There is no virus, firewall etc on this machine.
- Local and externally javascript files will not run, just get ignored.. no errors.

Any thoughts?

Run two scans (Trend Micro and Panda recommended) from smah's FAQ: faq760-3862

Do you have Service Pack 1 or 1a installed?
Do you have an active firewall in place?

You are showing all the indications of a blaster worm variation infection.

See what the two antivirus scans say.

wbochar,

Please advise as to whether a full reinstall of IE 6 as recommended above with the Daniel Petri instructions has helped.

At least it gives a good base to mess with the pure Java side of things.
