Hi guys,

We are using a web-based hardware dialler for communicating to customer in our call centre. All is fine, but the way agents interact with the dialler is through an ActiveX control.
95% of the time it works without problems, but on a couple of the Windows 2000 PC's (IE6 SP1) when the agents try to enter in notes in the field the characters come up as:

| | | | |

Anyone seen this before? I've logged a support ticket with the dialler company; but I have the feeling this is going to be an IE / Windows issue.

Thanks,

Steve.

Sounds like they have some weird character mapping set up. Are these users using weird keyboards? Do they maybe have weird locale settings? Are there any instances of the user being able to use the control properly one day, but showing | | | on other days?

Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks Jeff,

It's really strange - most of the time it works fine; but every now and then it just does this. Once they close all IE windows and reopen then it works just fine...!

Ta,

Steve.

Given it only happens sometimes and other times it's fine (on the same machine) I bet it's more likely the user has (inadvertently) enabled some obscure character encoding or something -- maybe you can do so by accidentally brushing some key-combination.

Very odd indeed. Anyone else got any ideas on this?

Cheers,
Jeff

Could be - but it seems that this is only happening on the Windows 2000 PC's we have. The XP ones seem fine...!

Interesting, I'm seeing the same thing happen with Hotmail sign ins on 2 different o/s.

O/S 1 - W2K3 SP1 running Terminal Services, IE 6.0 version 6.0.3790.1830 SP1, with enhanced Internet security enabled. Both the o/s and IE are fully patched.

O/S 2 - NT 4.0 SP6 running Terminal Services IE 6.0 version 6.0.2800.1106 SP1. Both the o/s and IE are fully patched.

In my case the 1st time it happened, it happened to me and I put it down to "user error" (i.e. accidentally hitting the scroll lock or some other key) even though my keyboard worked fine for everything except the email address of the Hotmail sign in.

Then I got a couple of other users reporting the same issue, again with Hotmail accounts. I was laying the blame on Hotmail until I saw this post. BTW, I put the Hotmail sign in page ( in my trusted sites and it still happens.

Spyware and anti-virus scans come up clean.

If its just Hotmail I can put up with the annoyance but my concern, after seeing this post, is that there may be other issues involved.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Meagan
