Hi. Thursday and Friday I had three W2K Pro machines each lose their ability to use the web. After checking everything I discovered that going into Internet Options--Connections--LAN Settings and un-checking ' Automatically Detect Settings ' resolved the problem. There are no proxy servers in use, all users use the LAN to get to the web, and all have manually assigned IP address's locally.

I understand that the manually assigned IP information might cause a problem if this box is checked. I have to wonder why we have been tooling along for 2 years plus without this problem ever occuring, and now it's hit three systems?

I did check for virus and spy bot activity: none found.

Might anyone have an idea what's changed, either on the PC's or on the LAN?

Many Thanks

Paul

Wasn't there a critical update on Thursday or Friday? I'm pretty sure there was, but I just installed it and didn't even bother reading it. Possibly this is the source of the change.

That's what I'm wondering. I generally keep ALL machines from automatically taking ANYTHING from Microsoft. However the master DC has SP3 installed... perhaps it's doing so and disseminating the patches itself. But then why only three so far? stranger and stranger
