When I type in a web address and hit go or enter IE will partially load the website and then it abruptly closes. It doesn't happen with all websites and I can't seem to find anything in common with the sites it does happen to. I'm running IE6 SP1.

Have you customized settings in IE? (silly question, I know: we all have our pet settings)
Point is, one of them may be causing it, so you may try (if you haven't already) setting defaults and see if it works.
Then ease into the changes you want and note if any of them are "stoppers".

Dawns on me, too, do you have Zone Alarm? I've hit pages that crashed me...the whole OS...from something set wrong in ZA. (it was on an XP setup that's down for motherboard replacement) But there's a post around here that's on this same subject.

Thanks, It turns out it was the Java VM causing the problems. When I switched to the microsoft VM it stopped happening.

Thanks, that may help some problems I'm having.
GUI is all cheesy...think it's some kind of display related thing...haven't been able to nail it down.
What OS?
(mine Win98 for another 3 daze)

I'm running XP Pro SP1. Getting rid of Win98 will solve a least some of your problems I am sure.

Gargouille I wonder if a BHO or combination of BHOs are causing your problem.

Try looking what BHOs are installed using BHO cop and test disabling them to see if it helps

Thanx, joeg, for your suggestion...but resolved it.
The computer I'm using is 1 I'm upgrading for a friend...added some memory, reinstalled the OS and generally doing maintenance on it.
Turned out I finally discovered someone (like his kids) had gone into the BIOS and CRANKED it...but now have that sorted out.
As for BHO Cop...have used Adaware for some time and have installed (& run) a trojan detector that works well.
I also run with Internet Explorer 3rd party browser extensions disabled and regularly flush the Downloaded Program Files directory...
