A colleague is using IE5 with W98SE. When she tries to go on-line via IE or OE, it does not dial-up, regardless of which settings she chooses in Internet Options, Connections.

However, if she double-clicks the dial-up short-cut, she can go on-line, then open IE, and work from there.

What is the answer to that one ?

Does the dial up window come up?
Does she have more than one connection listed in Dial up connections? Kimber

The more I learn,I realize how much more there is to know!

"Does the dial up window come up?" Not when she tries to go on-line via IE or OE.

"Does she have more than one connection listed in Dial up connections?" Yes, 2 of them, both of which work perfectly.

Somewhere at the back of my mind is a recollection that in a similar situation (with a different computer) some months ago, I uninstalled IE, and re-started the computer, allowing Windows to find and re-install IE. Much to my regret, I did not keep a note of what was involved, and cannot now remember precisely what it was. However, when I try to test this procedure in Norton CleanSweep, it tells me that IE is protected, so cannot be uninstalled. paieye

allowing Windows to find and re-install IE?
Hmm...ok

Well if I were you I would go to windows update and see if an update of the browser solves it for you.

If you already have told it to dial a connection is browser options I don't currently have another avenue to try as yet.

try the IE repair tool: control panel> add/remove progs> and when clicking to remove, it asks if you want to repair. its worth a try. and you are sure that "always dail my defualt connection" is in fact selected?

also, i would NEVER EVER EVER uninstall internet explorer on ANY pc. some may dissagree but you should NEVER need to and in later versions (mainly 6.0) it will kick your butt.
***my opinion and not always true in all cases***
