Where can I increase IE5.5's timeout values?

I'm using IE5.5 on W98 to browse on my LOCAL network (ie no DNS involved!!) and am getting "Cannot find server or DNS Error" - The page is being served by apache/php/mysql running on a very old and slow P75. The php script stitches together graphics tiles into a larger image, and then returns a GIF to the browser. This works OK until I get to about 8x8 tiles, then IE5.5 bombs out with, (in my option) the totally spurious and unhelpfull error above. The problem has nothing to do with DNS or network, it's just given up too soon for this application.

I've tried sending someting back to the browser at the begining of the php script but that then stops the "content=GIF" working.

There must be a way of extending this time out.

Pleezze HELP !!!
