IE5 can't download files

I have a user that reports that with IE 5 they can't download any files. If they click on a hyperlink, it comes up with a page not found error. If they right click on the hyperlink and try a save as, they get the same error. They also report that when they try to go to Windows Update, they get the same error.

User has latest Symantec virus def's and run a full system scan and found nothing.

Any ideas?

Barring any prohibitions against doing so, you really should consider upgrading away from 5 (arguably the worst incarnation of IE out there) to at least 5.5. If you must keep it, try the repair tool, instructions here:

Thanks. He was trying to update to 6.0 but can't get to Windows Update to do it. I'll send him the link for the full package...but he won't be able to download any files because..well, because that's what we're trying to fix.

If you can, pull it down to CD on another pc...
 
And...see if the repair tool in the KB article I posted gives any relief.
