Reloaded Win98 SAt and forgot to set security in IE5.5..somehow an evil script or worm loaded into my computer-I get a popup box advert for Popular Websearches from someplace called Websearch123, it only pops up when I hit the yahoo homepage. I have tried to find it in the registry but not knowledgeable enough to d o so. Any help appreciated to remove this aggravation from my system.

Are you sure it is a locally generated thing? Not just a plain popup from the yahoo site you're visiting?

Anyway it could be a BrowserHelperObject (a kind or "browser hook" - a piece of code that can examine and alter all url's the browser is handling)...

just do a search e.g. for BHOCaptor (one of the programs that can show, and render useless any BHOs); in IE55 you can't disable them globally..

should get you going...

You might try these first...

[1]Check your Hosts file....delete extraneous entries...this one for sure (66.40.16.218 auto.search.msn.com)

[2] Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search
in your registry...Change the values of both CustomizeSearch and SearchAssistant to:

The changes are made with scripting and also ActiveX controls. You stop the actions by disabling the scripting and ActiveX controls. You can see a list of these under Tools/Internet Options/General Tab/Settings/View objects, or in the folder C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files.

ok, for IE6user that answered, thanks, I learned something new there, but the only BHO showing up in my computer is one from the FTP prog i use: Gozilla. I am thinking-possibly this was a time-release thing-here's what I did. I had IE 5.01 ,updated to 5.5 by loading it from a MSN disk i got in the mail (faster than dialup d/ling it).Worked great 2 months, then I had to reload windows SAt, last, forgot to set security high. Got this popup for 3days, then Monday when I first opened browser, theres a MSN-RUNONCE page ad, that left when i clicked on home. Maybe it was just gimmick imbedded in that IE5.5 on this old disk I used to copy it from. >>> TO SMITEE-I will check your suggestions tonite and post back. Thanks everyone for your asistance..
