I am running IE 4.01 SP1 on a Win95 machine.

I downloaded the ie4sp2setup.exe (7 Mb) and when I run it, it refuses even to list the download sites available to download to c:\Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 setup\, asking me whether I have a proxy server.

I can download everything else. MS does not offer the 4.01 SP2 on CD-ROM.

What to do??

Edwin

Try using IE5.5 or IE6? These should work on WIn95 without problems. Most websites are written with these in mind anyway!

I'd like to know where you found the link.

Thank you, TheLad. I thought that IE 5.5 and up required IE4.01 SP2 as a minimum to install over - the very service pack that I cannot get under my belt. Am I wrong?

hi there
can i somehow keep ie5x on my comp & install ie6, to be able to launch any of them, but not get ie6 installed over my previous version?

i downloaded ie6 today & i don't like what this instalation did.. i want ie5 back, but with ie6 staying too..
(reason:for some dhtml checking.. doesn't matter)
(my platform is Win98, i have ie4.5 & ie5.0 (it wasn't me who installed'em..) on Mac; can i have something similar on my PC?) Victor

Simple answer=NO
The main components of IE are DLL's in the c:\windows\system directory.

Complicated answer=maybe. If you save all DLL's, track the installation, then right a batch file to rename the DLL's. Most likely won't work in Windows, you need to directly to DOS.

What exactly did the installtion do?

nothing special, & nothing of criminal; just like i wrote: ie5.0 was replaced by ie6.0, & that is what i'd like to avoid of..

but thanks, i got the answer: NO (i need it working under windows)

i just need as much different (/versions of/)browsers as possible, i wanted all of them on myne, but looks like i would have to install them on different machines...

thanks Victor

The link for the Explorer 4.01 SP2 is from windowsupdate - the site mentioned above in earlier correspondence. It creates a folder and installs an .exe but when the latter tries to download, no soap. Does that answer your link question? I still believe you need SP2 to install IE5 and higher - am I wrong?
