I'm thinking this is a more relevant forum than XP so i'll post an issue i raised there in here.

We have an intranet site that contains a number of office resources excel word and pdf docs. This works fine on Windows 2000 with IE6 when a user clicks on a link a box opens saying do you wish to open or save the file. If a user tries this on an XP box with IE6 an IE window opens with the correct URL but the file fails to open if i refresh the window then the file opens.

This also fails with IE7 but differently, in this case the new window pops up but is then closed straight away. I have the popup blocker turned off.

The links redirect to a mapped network drive that contains the files, the user can browse to the file and open it so it's not a permissions issue.

The page that contains the links uses Flash and possibly Java so it's possible that a new security feature might be causing an issue.

Can anyone suggest what security setting might be causing this?

Here is the link to my other post thread779-1308659

Thanks.

Sorry, I lost track of that other thread. If you just pasted the full path to the file into IE's address bar what happens? What do you see in Internet Options, Security tab, Local Intranet, Sites button?

If i paste the path on the XP box i get an error "Resource not available" (i'll check that's the exact error when i'm next at the box) on the 2K box it just opens.

I used the reset internet explorer settings box in the advanced tab and that seems to of started it working, unfortunatly this has left me unsure exactly what setting caused the issue to try it on another box.

Cheers.

Just to add a bit more detail.

On some WinXP pc's when i click the link the "File Download" box pops up and asks 'Do you want to open of save this file. On the ones where the link fails to open the document this box doesn't popup.

I'm not sure if that's any more help.

That is tied to a file type setting. Open Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab, select the file type in question, then the Avanced button. To get the prompt, place a check in the 'Confirm open after download' option.
