I have IE 5.5 and after a reformat and new installation of all my software, IE won't find certain pages. It just searches for a while and then stops giving the error screen 'Page not found'.

Sites for which this applies inlcude and even this site,
Does anyone know why this is so and what I can do to solve the problem. It works normally for other sites such as
Thanks

Have you changed your ISP or settings for DNS? It could be a DNS problem. It is simple to check, if you can't get then try which is the IP address. If the IP works you probably have a DNS server problem, if it doesn't then the problem lies elsewhere.

What OS are you using? I have similar problems with Win2K SP1
Try explicity entering your ISP's DNS Servers' IP addresses under your ISP's entry in Dial Up Networking. It kind of work for me. Or it could be an ISP problem. Which one are you using?

You could always try to see if the site works in Netscape to rule out any network problems :p

Paulwood,

your suggestion seems to be the problem. bbc opened without problems when I enetered the numbered address. What should I do to rectify this 'DNS' problem??

Hans

Depends what Operating System you are using and whether your using a modem or broadband connection. If you are using a modem, it may be that your ISP has problems with their DNS server, or that you need to enter the IP address of the servers in Dial up Networking as suggested by drkestrel. If you do not know the DNS server address, look at your ISP's support website, or contact them directly. They should be able to let you know how to proceed. If they don't, come back for more help.

Because the DNS server takes the names we type in like bbc.co.uk and converts it to an IP address like 212.58.224.35 it is the link to the internet, otherwise we would have to use IP addresses all the time, very difficult to remember!

When you connect with your ISP, you will be using the DNS server they specify unless you put the IP address for the server in Dial up Networking. To find out whether you have a server assigned (ISP assigned) DNS server, look at the properties for your ISP connection in DUN. Click on Server Types, then TCP/IP Settings. For DNS there are two options, Server Assigned or Specify. If the Server Assigned option is chosen, the DNS settings are greyed out and you will automatically use your ISP server.

Find out from your ISP what the settings should be, and make sure they are correct. Each ISP normally uses a different DNS server to the others, however if the above makes no difference, you could find out another DNS server address and use that instead.

Hi

I have tried all sorts of settings without luck. Contacting the ISP is also easier said than done as I am currently in Brazil and am using a 'internet by call' provider. I am only here for a short while still so am not so worried. My question however is how can I determine what the IP addresses of sites such as cnn etc are? Are this visible somewhere on the net, for example via a search engine?

Hans

The obvious way would be to use ping from the Dos prompt,
ie. ping and that would give you the IP. I suspect that from the problems you have been having, that may not work, worth a try though.

You can try downloading a program that provides lookup facilities like Ping Scanner Pro from Tucows or other file library, or you could look around some local ISP sites and see if they have details of their DNS servers. Failing that, let me know the URL for your provider, and I will see if I can find out their correct DNS settings.

thanks paulwood - great help, worked a charm!

My connection problem recur again!
Basically, get DNS error in IE5.5, but even entering IP address doesn't work (for fairly simple sites like this one)
However, Netscape 4.77 does work !
Any clueS?

Have you got a proxy server enabled in IE, and if you have, are you actually using one?

I do not have proxy server enabled.
It is Direct connection all the time. (Same for Netscape)

.... it has been awhile. But I'm wondering if anyone has found a solution to 'page not found'?

At my office, people running Windows 2000 and IE 5.5 or 6
get 'page not found' when they try to access our Intranet site. They do NOT have any problems getting to Internet pages.

Only Win 2000 users have the problem. The workaround is to
run 'ipconfig/renew' at the DOS prompt. Then they are able to get to the Intranet page. But the next day they have the 'page not found' problem again.

Any ideas?

Thanks, John
