I have been asked to help a friend with his computer.
They have a DSL connection. When they log onto AOL its fine. If you click Internet Explorer, it connects fine.

However, without logging onto AOL, if you click the explorer icon, you won't connect...

BUT, I have seen it work without going onto AOL first.
My machine, I simply click the explorer icon and I connect via my cable modem....

Thanks Ed

There has to be a provision for a PPoE "dialer" somewhere. The AOL connection is providing the PPoE authentication for the DSL connection.

If using XP, you can use its native PPoE capabilities by creating a new network connection and specifiying the authentication information for the DSL account.

launch internet explorer
then tools
then internet options
select connections

then select add, next to dialup vpn
then a wizard launches
select broadbrand
then name it
click finish
now high light the acount you just created
selct properties
just put username and password and select always dail or somethink to that affect

hope this helps
