I hope this is the forum. My associate's new ASUS notebook connects to the network (any network) but IE does not recognize the connection. (Offline.) The browser (same for Mozilla) does not connect and states no connection available when the "connect" button is hit. ASUS is being dreadful about the issue. I am sure this is a simple problem, but does anyone have any further insights?

Thank you very much.

When you say any network I am guessing that means you have tried several different networks? Is it possible that any (all) have configs which prohibit internet access without prior authorization (login, mac address filtering, added to the proxy server etc)?

What error does IE post?

Can you ping websites from a command prompt?

What OS? Vista? XP?

Can you login as ADMINISTRATOR? Do you receieve the same results?

Have you checked the event logs?

Try ipconfig /all and check all the parameters for the connection are set (Gateway, DNS, ...)

Cheers,
Dian

I mean just that: Any network including my own. I have two indentical laptops with identical settings, One will. One won't after my associate took it on a business trip. Both virus software, etc.

Diancecht: What settings should I be seeking?

Here's what I get

Functioning connection on my laptop

connection specific suffix: .....
IP Address 192.168.x.xxx
Subnet Mask 255.255.x.x
Default Gateway: 192 168.1.1

Non functioning Connection
connection specific suffix: .....
IP Address 192.168.x.xxx
Subnet Mask 255.255.x.x
Default Gateway: ...........

viva la difference. Default gateway missing. A message furthermore pops up:

Windows System error: There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network. (No number)

The icon in the tray shows it to be connected to my network with a strong signal. Any help appreciated. We need to take these to NY tomorrow.

Thanks.

Well, that's fixed. There seems to have been a conflict with a Broadband connecion someone must have set up for him. Removing it revealed that "connection with the Internet" was disabled - don't know why that wasn't visible before, but I guess the operative phrase here is "DUH". pointed me in that direction..thanks.
