Hi!

I’m looking for a site that breaks down browser usage.
Does anyone know where I can find a site like this?

I need to know what per cent of people use IE compared to Netscape.
I also need to know what versions of IE people seem to be using the most.

I found one site that gives me stats on this topic, but it’s pretty much out of date :)

Thanks for reading

Oh yeah! Poor old browser - looks like more people are realizing it is bad.

Thanks for brightening my day!

my site is 100% IE: although, i'm forced to create another index page for NS users, the 6% of NS users that want to use my site...:(
The thing is IE recongnizes most of the CSS and JS coding and is much easier to use then NS is...even the NS's iLAYER's tag is garbage...you can't set the iLAYER's width and height... I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

just lil question/comment

i agree that IE recongnizes CSS better but JS not rly since it was built by NS.....i could understand u saying VBS but not JS this is pritty much a useless comment i'm rly bored so yeah

Actually Netscape 6 does a really good job with CSS and DOM. Much better than even IE6. ===
Supports Mozilla and Web Standards
Knows HTML/XHTML, CSS1, JavaScript, PHP, C++, DOM1

Oh the bliss on Intranet work where if some one rings the helpdesk to complain that some page or other is displaying incorrectly we get to B*****k them for using non standard software :) Live long and make your kids suffer..

Which JS? Every time I have benchmarked the two side by side NS6/mozilla has beat IE hands down when it comes to serious JS processing, such as array manipulation, etc...

As to all the notes about IE recognizing CSS tags better, be careful!!! Part of the unseen battle here is about who controls web standards. Previously Netscape and IE were both guilty of trying to pollute the waters with their own proprietary tags, attributes, etc... Netscape is now trying to "play nice", as are the other 3rd party browsers, such as Opera, Mozilla, Konqueror, etc... The ideal here is that CSS/xHTML standards will give us a truly cross-platform world, which is something Microsoft does not want. So look carefully at the CSS or Javascript that IE "recognizes better" and you will often find that there are proprietary Microsoft elements involved.

This is just a heads-up, because I'm sure you all would prefer if *every* browser met the same standards. Let's not play Microsoft's game for them.

Hi,

I agree with rycamor, software developers should stick to standards, it would make programming and coding so much more enjoyable. The only weapon people like us have in this "battle" is to develop and code using standards and not use any proprietary elements. We should provide standard code and only standard code.

Bye.

Must comment.

NS handles "JavaScript" perfectly fine. However, NS has a problem with Microsoft's "JScript" and there is a difference between the two.

I write for an IE only intranet though, so my life is exponentially simpler than those of you who have to worry about compatability. Kevin

Just to clear myself up I was using javascript to test forms on a certina page...pass the variables through perl script...NS 6.0 could not handle the simple form verification...and beleive me I tried everything possible....I am just relating my experience..not trying to argue here...NS 6.01 is 150% fester and now works fine with all CSS / javascripting I do!!

CS,
Are you saying NS 6.01 is 100% faster than previous versions of NS or 100% faster than IE?

Thanks, Kevin

yahve, just to comment...

You say, "We should provide standard code and only standard code."

Pushing the envelope is the only thing which enables our skills and the browsers to develop. Where would we be if everyone just wrote standard HTMl 1.0? We certainly wouldn't have THIS cool site:

(not mine, just a cool site I found)

Hi,

I believe we would be better off sticking to standards. There is a lot one can do within standards and even more if one stretches them (think of how the table tag has been bastardized). There is a diffence between writing standard html and writing html using the standards. Anyway, I was more or less refering to browser specific tags and ways of doing things. If one uses proprietary tags then this does NOT expand the standard but reduces the possible audience. Standards always expand possibilities because the more people develop with them, the more applications have to recognize them (if they don't, they just won't be used anymore).

By the way, it might be that if coders were using standards, the software developers would have to follow and implement their "things" using those standards.

Bye.
